Canada May Vaccinate Children Under 12 This Fall! Priority for Children Aged 5-11

It has been 8 months since Canada first started vaccinating, but now only Pfizer vaccine is authorized by the Ministry of Health to apply to children over 12 years old in Canada. Moderna has also submitted an application for approval to Health Canada in June.

The problem is that children under the age of 12, including toddlers, still have no chance to get vaccinated. And clinical trials involving this age group are still in progress.

Only by allowing children to vaccinate as many as possible can we lay a solid foundation for the normal opening of schools, and at the same time prevent the children from bringing the virus into their homes and infecting all family members.

Fatima Kakkar, a pediatric infectious disease doctor at the CHU Saint-justine hospital in Montreal, said: "Most children have no symptoms, and they can spread the virus and become the host of the virus."

Although children are unlikely to have severe symptoms of COVID-19, the disease is not entirely benign for them.

Fatima said that the impact of the virus on children may be very serious. COVID syndrome will bring children to the hospital or even the intensive care unit. So for the health of children, vaccines are very important.

Generally, human trials in clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccines will be divided into three stages. The first and second phase trials require 10 to 100 healthy volunteers, focusing on adverse reactions and excessive immune reactions after vaccination.

The third phase of the trial requires the recruitment of thousands of participants, where they will either receive the vaccine or a placebo, and the trial staff will compare the results of the two groups of participants.

Actually, since March of this year, Pfizer and Moderna have started a COVID-19 vaccine trial for children under 12 years of age, and the results are expected to be announced in the fall. But before getting the vaccine, Health Canada must review these applications.

In May of this year, Health Canada stated that Pfizer may submit a vaccine application for the 5 to 11-year-old age group to the Ministry of Health "as early as September".

If the data looks good, then Canada may approve a child-level vaccine for this age group as early as this fall.

It is reported that trials for children aged 2 to 4 are also underway, but the results are not expected until the end of this year. Little babies will have to wait until the first or second quarter of next year.
